IUCN-WOAH Wildlife Health Webinar
On the 26. June the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) carried out a joint webinar to launch 'general guidelines for surveillance of diseases, pathogens and toxic agents in free-ranging wildlife', which aim to assist with the development and implementation of a national surveillance program. The webinar was carried out after the two organizations recently signed the Memorandum of Understanding. The event provided an overview of the broader work undertaken by IUCN and WOAH to support the incorporation of wildlife and ecosystem health into the One Health agenda.
We were happy to hear William B. Karesh, Tiggy Grillo, Kevin Smith, Francois Diaz, and Catherine Machalaba as speakers!
We will share the recording soon!

New Study highlights Challenges and Opportunities in Governance of Wildlife Trade & Prevention of Zoonoses
A recent study by Astbury et al., published in June, highlights the complex governance of wildlife trade and its vital role in preventing zoonoses. The research underscores the need for better inter-sectoral coordination among transnational organizations to overcome bureaucratic barriers, power dynamics, and conflicting objectives.
The study shows that the network of organizations involved in wildlife trade governance and zoonosis prevention is multi-sectoral. Despite some progress driven by the COVID-19 pandemic, significant challenges remain in achieving effective collaboration. The authors recommend a One Health approach, which gained prominence during the pandemic, as a promising strategy to align the roles and goals of various stakeholders. They conclude that while progress has been made, a concerted effort is needed to address existing barriers and improve inter-sectoral coordination. The study calls for transnational organizations to adopt a One Health approach and work towards equitable, prioritized, and goal-oriented governance of wildlife trade to effectively prevent zoonoses.
