The Alliance at 'Breaking Barriers'

The Alliance co-organised the 'Breaking Barriers: advancing the One Health Agenda with a Focus on Environment' conference in Berlin on October 12-13, 2023 together with WCS, BMZ, BMUV, UNEP, FAO, WOAH, WHO and GIZ. Our Head of Program Dr. Michael Nagel delivered his keynote speech on the 'wildlife trade x health nexus' highlighting that 'we need to reduce the risk of zoonotic spillover and step-up responses to human and animal health risks in wildlife trade.'

The Alliance Secretariat's Senior Advisor One Health/Biodiversity and Health, Dr. Kim Gruetzmacher, joined the opening panel discussion on Cross-Sectoral reflections and future Opportunities for One Health, alongside Doreen Robinson (UNEP), Dr. Keith Sumption (FAO), Dr. Frauke Fischer (University of Wuerzburg) and Dr. Mariam Wallet Mohamed Aboubakrine (Arramat Project).

The Secretariat furthermore co-organised two breakout sessions on Pandemic Prevention at Source and German 'Flagship' Projects in cooperation with our partners (WCS, UNEP, WOAH, WHO and EcoHealth Alliance) which have triggered fruitful discussions around the importance of a joint understanding of the term prevention and how to engage with partners to foster preventative actions at source. OHHLEP members as well as several of our Alliance members actively contributed to the sessions. Read more about the great speakers and breakout sessions on the Event Website and visit our Event Report to find out about the outcomes of the wonderful gathering.

Alliance Event

World Health Summit 2023

The Alliance Secretariat has joined this year's World Health Summit (WHS) in Berlin from October 15-17, 2023. Alongside scientists, policymakers, and change-makers, the Secretariat has represented the Alliance and attended many different sessions. This year, the Summit hosted a number of relevant sessions, although still only a few have centralised the One Health approach. While there have been many important sessions related to human health, the environment and animal health still remained rather underrepresented. Yet, sessions on 'One Health and Avian influenza' or on 'Intergenerational and Interspecies One Health Equity' hosted by WCS and supported by our SC member Dr. Craig Stephen have shown the relevance of a One Health approach to the WHS audience. We hope to see more One Health engagement in the coming years. You can watch the session on 'One Health Equity' on YouTube and you can read the Alliance's Event Report here.

Upcoming Expert Talk

The Alliance warmly welcomes Julia Fa to our upcoming Expert Talk on November 14, 2023. Julia Fa will be presenting on 'Working with rural and indigenous communities to understand wildlife use and zoonotic disease'. Julia Fa is a senior research associate at the Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and has more than 30 years experience in academic research and teaching in conservation science.

This event will kick-off our new thematic period guided by the question on how cultural and behavioural factors impact pathogen spill over risks in wildlife trade and therefore health risks. If you would like to send us a contribution to this question (e.g. a blogpost for the Alliance website), please reach out and send us an email. We are happy to receive your input.

Would you like to share something with our community? As we have introduced our new format of 'pitches' after each event, feel free to reach out and sign up for a pitch after this Expert Talk. Your pitch is free to cover any topic, request, outreach, or anything else you would like to present and bring into the Alliance Community.

Dr. William Crosmary at 'Voices from the Ground'

The Alliance has greatly enjoyed its first Voices from the Ground Event after the summer break with Dr. William Crosmary from the WWF Germany. Dr. Crosmary and his team have shared their experiences working on the Alliance funded project on 'Zoonosis risk along the bushmeat value-chains: The case of Salonga National Park and Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo'. He presented on first (preliminary) lessons learned, the struggles of the field research and explained how the on-the-ground implementation of this project, besides any geographical challenges posed by the characteristics of the Salonga National Park, has worked out so far. To know more about the project, have a look at the project profile, to watch this event, you can find the recording and presentation slides in our members area.
